10 HEALING TEAS (PART 1)

There is nothing more comforting and tasty than to drink a cup of hot (or cold!) herbal tea, either with a good book, as an afternoon snack, to feel energized in the morning, calm nerves in stressful situations, or to soothe before bedtime. But the best part is that these powerful herbs have profound medicinal and empowering benefits that can aid our health naturally. Tea fascinates me, we have so many different ones at our house and I use them a lot for any discomfort that may arise.

Here are 10 amazing herbs known for their great benefits, which when consumed as tea, provides us with a cup of health and longevity.

1. Dandelion Root: This herb promotes good digestion (helping with stomach pain and heartburn), naturally balances the intestines, stimulates appetite and has a gentle laxative effect. As a diuretic, it aids the kidneys with toxin release, which inhibits the growth of bacteria in the urinary system, reducing the risk of tract infections. Improves liver function by removing toxins and restoring the balance of electrolytes. Dandelion is rich in antioxidants that prevent free radical damage on our cells and DNA. It’s also high in vitamin C, A, D and B complex, and contains iron, potassium and zinc. It purifies the blood, helps with circulation, regulates blood sugar levels, lowers cholesterol, reduces joint pain, increases bile production decongesting the gallbladder, and it’s beneficial for certain skin conditions. Contains essential fatty acids, and phytonutrients that reduce inflammation throughout the body. If you’re allergic to calendula, chrysanthemum, daisies or chamomile, you should not consume dandelion. The roasted dandelion root is one of my favorites, first because it detoxifies the liver, but also because the taste is super rich and easily replaces a morning coffee. I usually add a splash of almond milk and stevia. As an extra tip, buy dandelion greens and add it to your juices or smoothies.

2. Peppermint: Helps improve digestion, reduces heartburn, helps dissolve gallstones, soothes nausea, fights bad breath and reduces stress. Calms headaches and reduces fever by inducing you to sweat, plus it helps you expel mucus and other toxins from the lungs, bronchi and trachea in the presence of flu or respiratory problems. Menthol helps with the symptoms of IBS because it calms the nerves inside the stomach, reducing the intensity of cramps, gas and inflammation.

3. Pau D' Arco: helps to purify the blood, strengthen the immune system, protects the liver, and is beneficial for the treatment of cancer (in fact it’s one of the few recommended by the Gerson therapy). I’ve read that it can help with diabetes, inflammation, lupus and fibromyalgia. It’s also an expectorant and good for when you have the flu with phlegm. It’s excellent while doing a candida treatment due to it’s anti-fungal properties, in addition to it’s an anti- parasitic, anti-bacterial and antiviral agents…It’s like an ANTI EVERYTHING BAD POWERHOUSE! I love pau d'arco and drink it constantly.

4. Ginger: soothes nausea, combats motion sickness, it helps with digestion (because it stimulates the secretion of fluids like saliva and bile), fights inflammation, stomach cramps, flatulence, controls chronic pain including muscle aches and arthritis. It contains approximately twelve antiviral complex, it’s antiseptic and antioxidant. Minimizes flu symptoms, allergies, respiratory conditions, sore throat and inflammation of mucous membranes, in addition to bring fever down. The taste of cold ginger tea (with lemon) or hot, makes you all warm and tingly inside. I use it a lot for stomach issues and is always in my bag when I travel.

5. Nettle: has super high alkaline mineral content and blood purifying properties. It’s a diuretic, which helps cleanse the blood through the kidneys. It’s good for eczema, improves skin, strengthens nails and damaged teeth. Increases thyroid function, activating the metabolism. It also helps remove mucus and toxins from the colon. I started using four months ago primarily for environmental allergies and helps me a lot.

6. Echinacea: Raises levels of properdin, a chemical that activates the immune system, which is responsible for increasing the defense mechanisms of the body against viral and bacterial attacks. Relieves pain, reduces inflammation and has antioxidant effects. There is some controversy in regards to if it reduces the frequency of recurrent colds and cuts the duration of flu symptoms; some sources support it, while others don’t.

7. Valerian: is a natural sedative that calms the nervous system. It has become a popular cure for insomnia. Because of it’s relaxing properties, it’s effectively used to relieve anxiety and stress. Helps to calm migraines, soothes muscle tension, aids with menstrual problems and lowers blood pressure.

8. Chamomile: has such a delicious and delicate flavor that you never imagine all the power it has. It’s a natural sedative, calming nerves and promoting sleep. But it also has anti fungal, antibacterial, antiseptic and anti inflammatory properties. It contains oils that relax the stomach muscles, helping with indigestion, gas and cramps as well as being an intestinal antispasmodic. It calms panic attacks and anxiety episodes. I drink chamomile tea every day of my life, either alone or combined with other teas, I enjoy the taste and reminds me of my childhood, when my mom prepared it to me with milk before sleeping (only now I do it with almond milk).

9. Clove: it has a strong flavor and fragrant aroma, but is a wonderful antioxidant that possesses antiviral, antifungal, antibacterial and anti inflammatory properties. Helps fight infections and relieve pain because of it’s potency as an analgesic. Works as an expectorant releasing respiratory tract mucus. It’s also used to treat strep throat infections.

10. Milk Thistle: repairs the liver by stimulating protein synthesis and changing the outer layer of cells. This process blocks toxins who cannot enter them and then get removed by the body. Because it’s an emollient, it helps soothe inflamed mucous membranes and the liver, which is beneficial in cases of cirrhosis and hepatitis. Many sources indicate that it helps lower cholesterol, aids people who have type 2 diabetes and reduces the growth of cancer cells. It has the active antioxidant, silymarin which prevents cell damage caused by free radicals. People with allergies to artichokes, kiwi or daisys may be sensitive to this plant.

Next week I'll post ten more wonderful herbal teas that provides us with health and relief naturally. Having a cabinet full of herbal tea is like owning a small pharmacy that gets you out of many troubles. Literally my husband has to control me in the supermarket because I wasn’t born with tea restraint (besides my obsession with giant mugs does not help). I drink them daily according to my mood, the time of day and my health needs…long live tea!

With Love,
Romina
